Art as Meditation

Holly Stone

Do you ever find yourself in “The Zone” as you paint or draw? Does time seem to stand still and you find yourself in a glorious flow state? Explore tapping into this stage at will and connecting deeply with your intuition as you create art. Holly brings with her a wealth of experience to share after spending 15 months in India studying sacred Tibetan Thangka painting, and various forms of meditation. Simple, useful meditation exercises, setting of intentions, exercises to tap into the intuitive side of your brain, as well as symbolic use of color and shape will challenge you to explore an intensely personal expression of your art. The process of doing art can be a meditation in itself. Give yourself the gift of peace of mind and join us! Bring art supplies and projects of your choice. If you wish to use personal music in class please bring headphones. Maximum 8.

Creating a Personal Travel Journal

Holly Stone

There are many reasons to make your own visual travel journal - it can help you improve your ability to see quickly and accurately as you put down what you see in front of you, it can provide information to use for larger studio works, you will be more fully present as you connect with the scenes around you, and it can help you loosen up for painting or drawing.

This class is designed to help you devise a way to capture images quickly and with feeling - to create visual memories of a trip, illustrate a written journal you are keeping, or just loosen up as an artist. We will be doing several exercises sketching from life and from photos as you develop your own style and personal journal. Bring supplies of your choice that are small and portable (suggestions: travel watercolor set and small brushes with small w/c sketchbook or individual pieces of w/c paper; pen, ink, and paper; markers and paper, etc.) We will discuss pros and cons of various art materials for quick sketching/ painting. Class is designed to be fun, supportive and expressive. Maximum 8.

Exploring Color Through Mandalas

Holly Stone

In this fun three session workshop, we will explore different cultural meanings and traditions of color, as well as do exercises designed to help you to become more aware of the personal meanings color has for you. Using the ancient structure of a mandala, a sacred circle symbolizing the universe, you will apply color choices and personal meaning as you design and create your own work of art. Mandalas may be highly detailed, or expressive and loose. For experienced artists, this is an opportunity to go outside of your familiar or traditional palette – and explore subjective reactions to new color combinations. For everyone, it is a great opportunity to explore this age old tradition and enjoy the peace that connecting to these ancient art forms can bring. Recently returned from a 15 month stay in India, Holly brings a background in use of traditional Indian and Tibetan symbolic color and art forms to share with the class. Limited supplies will be available for first week of class. Further supply suggestions for students to bring for their own ideas/designs for subsequent classes: pencils, sharpeners, erasers, pen and ink, magazines for collage, acrylic or watercolor paints and brushes, glue and embedded items, etc. Maximum 8.
