Running for City Council

The City Clerk handles candidates filing for City Council.

Up for Election in 2022

  • Two City Council seats (serving Jan. 2, 2023, to January 2027)

The City Council seats will be elected in the General Election on Nov. 8, 2022.

Candidate Filing Period and Where to File

Candidates must schedule an appointment to file in person with the City Clerk at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., Edina:

  • Between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays Aug. 2-15 or
  • Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 16

What To File and Filing Fee

The following is required to be recorded with the City Clerk when filing for office:

  • Affidavit of Candidacy
  • Filing fee of $5
  • In place of the fee, candidates may present a petition with 500 signatures of eligible voters , as allowed by Minnesota Statute 204b.11 Subdivision 2

Candidate Withdrawal

A candidate who has filed for office may remove their name from the ballot by filing an affidavit of withdrawal with the City Clerk. See this PDF for the form.

Candidates may withdraw anytime within the filing period, or within two days of the end of the filing period (no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 18).

Filing Campaign Financial Reports

  • Initial report is due to the City Clerk within 14 days after receiving contributions or making disbursements of more than $750.
  • Subsequent reports are due 10 days before and 30 days after the election, and each year by January 31 until a final report is filed.
  • Final report is due when all debts are settled and all assets are disposed of in excess of $100.
  • Candidate campaign financial reports will be posted on the City's website within 30 days of receipt and remain posted for four years.
