Meeting Location and Time: Annual Meeting in October
Description
Formed at a neighborhood meeting in 2003, the Morningside Neighborhood Association (MNA) is a volunteer-led neighborhood organization and Minnesota non-profit corporation. The mission of the MNA is to promote a better community through group action, to promote involvement in decisions made by local government and to represent the interests of all residents and property owners in the Morningside Neighborhood of Edina.
Membership in the MNA is automatic for all Morningside residents and property owners age 18 and older. There are no dues and no requirements to be on a membership list to participate in MNA meetings and events. Neighbors may sign up for the MNA email list to receive news and updates on issues of interest to the neighborhood.
Neighborhood History
First platted in 1905 by the children of farmer Jonathan Grimes, Morningside is Edina’s oldest residential neighborhood. In 1920, the neighborhood of Morningside became the Village of Morningside when it split from the still largely rural Edina over payment for urban amenities (streetlights, sidewalks). Morningside remained independent until 1966 when, in response to State prompting, it became part of Edina again.
The Morningside neighborhood consists of more than 700 homes on 21 blocks, and a small business district at the intersections of France Avenue and West 44th Street, and France Avenue and Sunnyside Road.
Today, Morningside is home to a number of historic properties, such as the Grimes house at 4200 W. 44th St. (1869), added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976; the former Odd Fellows Hall at 4388 France Ave. (1918); and a series of 1909-1922 bungalows on the north side of West 44th Street between France and Grimes avenues.
In 2005, Morningside celebrated 100 years as a neighborhood and community. In recognition of Morningside’s 100th anniversary, the City of Edina presented Morningside with the 2005 Edina Heritage Award for Morningside’s contributions to the history, culture and community of Edina.
