  5. 3355: Monday Morning Raku Firing

    June 25, 2018, 9:30 AM - 11:30 PM @ Edina Art Center

    Join this class to make, glaze and fire Raku pottery. Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. Bisque pots are glazed, dried and fired in the kiln where they remain until the glazes have melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku process is fun and hands-on and produces wonderful, lustrous and crackle glazes. All students will glaze-fire three times in this 8 week class. *No class July 2.

    This class is a beginning metal sculpture class. Students will learn how to create any style of sculpture by forging, hammering or assembling pieces of metal. Students will learn to weld metals using both gas and wire feed type of welders. Bring in your found art from your basement and learn to assemble pieces into a memorable sculpture for your garden or home. Judd Nelson specializes in creating life size birds from the Midwest and will demonstrate how to create them. Modern or contemporary sculptures are also encouraged and artist Craig Snyder who specializes in this style will demonstrate techniques to create contemporary work. Students are required to wear jeans, long sleeve cotton shirts and boots or closed-toe shoes for safety consideration. *This class will be held in Mr. Nelson’s sculpture studio located near 394 and 494 and is a short distance from The Edina Art Center. **No class July 5.

    This course is designed to familiarize students with charcoal drawing via reductive erasure techniques and energetic mark-making variety from a live model. To achieve familiarity with charcoal and a sense of experimentation and play when it comes to developing economy of mark through a variety of time and scale challenges, allowing a more personal mark to emerge. We will include both additive and reductive charcoal techniques and play with scale and speed (15sec gestures to more dedicated 1hour+) to develop a range of effects.   1. Concert: Hopkins Westwind Concert Band

    The Hopkins Westwind Concert Band (HWCB), under the direction of Conductor Mike Anderson and Conductor Emeritus Don Bates, is a community band based in Hopkins, Minnesota. Since 1983 the HWCB has been making music in the Twin Cities metro area. During those years, the band has performed for thousands of people in various outdoor venues including the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis, Centennial Lakes in Edina, the Burwell House in Minnetonka, Friendship Village in Bloomington, Downtown Park in Hopkins, and locations in St. Paul, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, and Plymouth. Since 1987 it has sponsored the Raspberry Festival of Bands, an event that showcases five area community bands. It regularly performs indoor concerts at Edinborough Park in Edina, the Hopkins High School Auditorium, and the Eisenhower Community Center. Hopkins Westwind Concert Band will be playing at the Centennial Lakes Maetzold Amphitheater. Popcorn and soda available for purchase at our concessions stand!
