In his signature long-necked portraits, iconic female enigmas emerge from ethereal and atmospheric backgrounds, their haunting gaze drawing the viewer to come closer. Inspired by Russian and Byzantine Iconography, Harper uses the artistic lens of magical realism in distorting the human figure as a means of elevating each work beyond mere portraiture. Rather than focusing on the documentation of a specific person in a specific time and place alone, he confounds reality and in doing so, offers the potential for storytelling, universal symbolism and allegory.
