On behalf of the Edina Police Department, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Mr. George Floyd’s family and friends.
What happened to Mr. Floyd was devastating. Our hearts break along with all in our nation. It is unbelievable to have this occur at all, especially in our great state of Minnesota.
I am confident that I can speak for our entire department that this crushes our souls on a very personal and professional level. We work very hard to develop relationships and trust with the residents of our community. We take pride in responding to the aid of people in need. We serve with compassion of heart and integrity of character. We serve to maintain safety for all.
Many have reached out with concerns. I can assure you that I’m listening. We welcome these tough conversations as they will help us continue to progress in law enforcement and heal from this tragedy together. We strive to uphold our reputation with integrity as a just and equitable department. We recognize the need for continued evolvement and growth.
I’ve been asked what we’re doing in Edina to ensure that a situation like the one with Mr. Floyd does not happen here. We know that for us to be successful, we must have strong public trust, solid partnerships in the community and quality training. You can read more about Police Officers’ required training and our Race & Equity work plan online.
We hold our officers, as they hold themselves, to very high standards of integrity and professionalism. Our hiring process is lengthy and extremely in-depth to make sure that the person we are hiring meets those high standards and the City’s values of integrity, quality and service.
I can speak for all of our officers when I say that every member of the Edina Police Department takes pride in wearing our badge and we won’t shy away from having these conversations. Our success depends on the trust from the public and we will work hard every day to earn and keep it.
