Black History Month is important because…

I think that Black History Month is important because most stories about our history are told by white people and about white people. Black people like me deserve their own stories and history. I think people in the U.S have started to recognize that. Vice President Kamala Harris is a step in the right direction for us so let's come together and not just walk on the right path, but run on the right path.

As a Black mother & wife, I believe it is important to share Black History, Black Excellence, Black Stories as a family throughout the year.  We want our children to know and feel the power and strength that comes from being black and following in the footsteps of amazing Black people.  These stories are not easily found or shared in our schools or media. And in many cases, the stories shared are based on negative stereotypes or are focused on just a few famous Black people. Which means, it is critical for us to ensure our children are not only aware, but proud of the legacy & breadth of Black Excellence found throughout history & today.

During Black History Month, when the spotlight shines on Black achievement, we share those positive, accurate stories found on social media, TV and movies, as a family. We also take time to honor those in our family that worked tirelessly to create the opportunities we experience today.

Black History Month represents an opportunity to celebrate Black achievement and excellence beyond our family.  We celebrate and honor our history with our neighbors, friends, and community.
