Black History Month

Posted on: February 16, 2021

[ARCHIVED] Elena Brito Sifferlin

Black History Month is a good time to reflect on the contributions made by Black Americans for our country and community in order to work towards a more inclusive community for the entire year, every year. While serving on a working group of the Edina Race and Equity Task Force I was enlightened to learn about one of our founding families that had been overlooked over the years, the prominent Black family - the Yancey Family. They were one of several pioneer Black families of our area. It made me proud to learn that my community of Edina had originally began as a culturally diverse community. Sadly, there was a period that Black families were forced out and new housing developments used racial covenants to bar Black families from homeownership in Edina. This part of Edina history is something I hope as a community we can deeply examine and reconcile in order to move forward to become a welcoming community for everyone that lives and works in Edina.  Positive steps already taken are re-naming an Edina park in recognition of the Yancey Family and programming offered by local organizations like the Edina Community Foundation and the League of Women Voters Edina to examine and reconcile racism in our community.  We can do more, much more. Edina is truly Better Together!
