Three New Officers Sworn into Edina Police Department

Edina, Minn., Nov. 15, 2023 – The Edina Police Department formally welcomed three new officers and three new sergeants at a ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Jared Simmer, Jacob Prince and Janeth Rico were sworn in as the City's newest officers.

Simmer grew up in Shorewood and went to Minnetonka High School. He served in the Army National Guard for more than five years and holds the rank of Sergeant. Simmer studied Law Enforcement at Minnesota State University - Mankato and graduated last spring with his bachelor’s degree. He also worked as a Community Service Officer in Edina for two years before being promoted to a Police Officer.

Prince grew up on the east side of St. Paul and later moved to Oakdale. He played football and basketball at Cretin-Derham Hall High School and continued his football career at the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Psychology. Prince started with Edina as a Police Cadet in October 2022.

Before working at the Edina Police Department, Janeth Rico worked for Amazon. While working at Amazon, she decided to make a career change and started attending Rasmussen University. She graduated in June with a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement.

“Policing is not just a profession, it is a calling – a commitment to the highest ideals of justice, integrity and selflessness,” said Police Chief Todd Milburn. “It is a duty to protect and serve, even in the face of danger, and to uphold the rights and dignity of every resident. As we welcome our new officers into our ranks, we are not only granting them a badge and a uniform, but we are entrusting them with the tremendous responsibility of maintaining the peace and safety of our community.”

Promoted Sergeants Darren Davis, Emily Jepson and Jesse Penman received their new badges at the ceremony, too. Each have a wide range of experience and talent which has prepared them for this next step.
