Travis Larson Recognized with DWI Hat Trick

Edina, Minn., Dec. 27, 2022 – Officer Travis Larson of the Edina Police Department completed a DWI Hat Trick during his shift May 27, 2023, and was recently recognized for it by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS).

A DWI Hat Trick is three arrests for DWI during one shift. Larson has been an officer with Edina since Feb. 23, 2021. He is one of the department’s Drug Recognition Evaluators (DRE) and a Law Enforcement Phlebotomist, meaning he can draw a blood sample from someone suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. In the same month as the Hat Trick, Larson was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his contributions against impaired driving.

“Hat tricks shouldn’t happen. Drunk driving can be avoided by calling an Uber, taking public transportation, phoning a friend – It’s concerning,” said OTS Law Enforcement Liaison Bill Hammes. “This is lifesaving work. Every day that Travis is out doing his job, that’s a family member home safe for the holidays.”

"It is always nice to see officers get recognized for their hard work and dedication to the community they serve,” said Sergeant Darren Davis. “Officer Larson’s recent recognition for three DWI arrests in one shift just speaks to his passion regarding the importance of removing impaired drivers from our roadways.”

From Jan. 1, 2023, through Dec. 21, 2023, Edina officers made 206 DWI-related arrests.
