City Seeks Feedback on West 72nd Street

Edina, Minn., March 25, 2019 – City of Edina seeks feedback on the design of West 72nd Street between Lynmar Lane and France Avenue.

As part of the redevelopment of 7200 and 7250 France Ave., the City Council is requiring the developer to reconstruct that section of West 72nd Street to provide a roadway that better meets the goals of Edina’s Living Streets Policy. Living Streets balance the needs of all users in ways that promote safety, enhance community identity and provide opportunities for active living and better health.

Staff used the Living Streets Policy and comments from the public regarding pedestrian safety and traffic to develop a concept for the reconfigured roadway section. The draft concept is for a 24-foot wide roadway with a slight horizontal curve. Parking would only be allowed on the north side of the street. The existing sidewalk would be replaced with an 8-foot shared-use path with a boulevard.

Transportation Planner Andrew Scipioni explained how the proposed concept ties in with Living Streets, saying, “Vehicles typically travel slower on narrow, curved streets compared to straight, wide sections. Boulevards create facilities that feel safer for pedestrians and cyclists because they are separated from motorized traffic, and provide opportunities for trees, landscaping and/or treatment of stormwater.”

The City would like to hear residents’ opinions on the proposed lane width, parking and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, as well as any other suggestions to improve the section of West 72nd Street. Residents are encouraged to learn more and weigh in online at www.BetterTogetherEdina.org/West72nd.

The City Council is scheduled to take final action on the proposed redevelopment of 7200 and 7250 France Ave. April 2. Reconstruction of West 72nd Street will only occur if the project is approved and the developer is able to secure financing. If the project proceeds, construction would tentatively occur in 2021 or 2022.

On the site www.BetterTogetherEdina.org/West72nd, staff is also collecting information for a West 72nd Street Pedestrian Safety Assessment from Oaklawn Avenue to Cornelia Drive. Over the years, staff has received concerns related to pedestrian safety on West 72nd Street at the intersections of Oaklawn Avenue and Cornelia Drive. Staff would like to better understand the concerns and develop a trial assessment of safety improvements.
