The Edina Police Department and Memorial Blood Centers will host a blood drive 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, in the Council Chambers of Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. The blood drive is part of Memorial Blood Centers’ annual “Battle of the Badges.”
In its 14th year, Battle of the Badges aims to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation through a friendly, life-saving competition between first responders. Other groups of first responders participating in Battle of the Badges include the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office, Loretto Fire Department, Hopkins Police and Fire departments, Wayzata Fire Department, Shakopee Police Department, Wyoming Police Department, Elk River Police Department and several others.
The blood drive is open to the public and walk-ins are welcome. However, it is recommended participants sign up for a donation time in advance. To sign up for a donation time, visit www.mbcherohub.club and search sponsor code 0111.
“There is no greater gift than the gift of life,” said Edina Police Sgt. Kevin Rofidal. “Nobody knows that more than first responders, which is why we have partnered with Memorial Blood Centers to encourage everyone to donate blood.”
All blood types are needed, especially O negative (O-) and O positive (O+). Donors whose blood type is O+, O-, A- or B- can donate double red cells if they choose.
