The Parks & Recreation Department strives to offer activities that reflect the diverse interests in our entire community. Some residents already are playing cricket on park fields, and we have received many requests to start an Edina league.
Some experienced cricket players have offered their assistance to help launch the league and teach people the game. With their help, we are able to offer our residents this opportunity to play or try out a new sport.
Tape ball cricket is easy to learn, less formal and doesn't require an official cricket field, which Edina does not have. We will be playing on existing turf fields at Braemar Field and possibly Pamela Park.
That's fine. We want you to try it.
"Tape ball cricket is a great entry point," says Haris Saddiqi, one of two local men helping Edina launch the league. He and Masaood Yunis will be helping people learn the game. They both say anyone who has played softball or baseball will quickly pick it up as the skills are transferrable.
Options for you:
The general information about the league includes some of the basic rules we will be using for play.
We expect the experienced players and the officials will help new players learn the rules and how to play the game.
You don't need either. The league is supplying all the necessary equipment. Uniforms aren't necessary. People should just wear clothes for moderate activity. No metal spikes on shoes are allowed on the field, however.
Cricket, by the way, doesn't use fielding gloves like softball or baseball. Fielders retrieve balls bare-handed.
This is a recreational league. Participants know there will be a few newcomers to the game. Our hope is these become teaching moments where the new people simply learn about the game. This league is being pushed by current players who want to introduce the game to new people and expand the sport in Edina.
Absolutely. Anyone is welcome to come and watch.
Games in the inaugural league will be happening Friday and Saturday evenings on the outdoor turf of Braemar Field. Updates and reminders will be on the City of Edina's Facebook, Twitter and Nextdoor feeds.
We are working on putting together an introductory clinic or two in connection with the league. Details on that will be announced later.
