    Having a good image is the beginning of a good painting. Our images should have a good balance between lights and darks, warm and cool values, an interesting composition and clear detail. Drawing using the sight-size or the comparative method is encouraged, but our focus is on painting and means to shortcut the drawing stage can be used when needed. This class offers an opportunity to see with fresh eyes.

  13. 5103: Traditional Watercolor

    July 17, 2018, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Edina Art Center

    Learn the basics of watercolor: how to carry a wash, mix colors and see values. There will be a strong emphasis on drawing, critiques and demonstrations. The class will start with demonstrations. Students will then do a copy from the flat piece and then proceed to setting up small still-lives to paint from nature. This will be a very informative class based on the history of traditional watercolor.

  14. 3206: Advanced Soda Firing Methods

    Students will work to create and prepare pottery to be fired in the studio’s outdoor soda kiln. Advanced students will work on and off the wheel on thrown, altered and hand-built forms. Emphasis will be on creating pottery forms that work well in the soda kiln. This is a hands-on class where we learn the theory and practice of loading, firing, unloading and glazing for the soda kiln. *No class July 3 or Aug. 7

    With Denise Willey Johnson and Michael Bedard. Art Academy is designed to give optimum individualized guided art instruction to students who show aptitude and a focused attitude. Summer Art Academy is a shorter version of the year-long program for new students to see if this is a good fit. Returning Art Academy students are welcome to register as well. *No class July 3.
